Meeting planned for those interested in new charter school

EASLEY — Those interested in a new charter school that will be offered by Intense Charter Schools next fall will have a meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kimberly Hampton Library in Easley.

The new school was approved by the State Public Charter School District. Plans are for the new school to be housed at The Dream Center in Easley, formerly known as The Simpson Academy, at 200 West Avenue. The School District of Pickens County’s Board of Trustees approved the sale of the facility, with trustees Herb Cooper and Judy Edwards voting against the sale.

The school plans to emphasize fitness, nutrition and careers. Problem-based learning will be featured as well.

The school will offer only grades 5-7, with approximately 120 students its first year. Plans are currently to add an eighth grade the second year and grow to 280 students.

Approximately 20,000 students attend 61 private charter schools in South Carolina.
