New retail store to open this Friday

PICKENS — The name says it all. “Oh Joy!” is an eclectic mix of apparel, jewelry, shoes, accessories, home and garden décor, gifts, collectibles, antiques and retro candy. The owner, Joy King purchased the old general store on Railroad Street in Pickens in January, and along with her husband Richard, has renovated the 924 sq ft. building.

King said that during the renovations, several people stopped by to ask what was going to be in the building. After hearing many stories about folks who would go to the store to buy candy as children, she decided to add retro candy to her inventory.

“I want to recreate the feel of the general store that was once here,” King said. “My other interest is finding as many ‘Made in America’ products as possible. That has proven to be a challenge. My shoe line, OKAb is made in Atlanta, my jewelry line, Petals, is made in Spartanburg; the retro candy is made in Connecticut. ‘Rustic Man’ furniture is made in North Carolina from native trees, and a local artesian has made several tables and benches from American Wormy Chestnut. In fact, I have a few items made locally of reclaimed wood from the old Pickens High School. As I replenish my inventory I hope to have more and more products made in America.”

The grand opening event will be this Friday and Saturday May 1718 with door prize giveaways every hour on both days.

“Oh Joy!” is located at 111 Railroad Street in Pickens and is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
