Preston T. Rackley
Pickens – Preston Thomas Rackley, 60, of 289 Juniper Lane, died Monday May 9, 2011 at his home.
Preston was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Homer and Lucille Hawkins Rackley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War and was formerly an electrician while living in Savannah, Ga.
Surviving is his brother Marvin E. Rackley and his wife Lisa of Pelzer and his sister Nancy Crymes of Cowpens.
Graveside services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.

Mary Smith
Liberty – Mary Louise Boggs Smith, 99, of 19 Nealy Street, widow of Melvin Stevenson Smith, died peacefully, Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens.
Born in Central, she was a daughter of the late Zachary Taylor and Sarah Chapman Boggs. She was the oldest & longest tenure member of Calumet Baptist Church, where she was very active for numerous years. During her long life Mrs. Smith was very involved in community activities, having served as Worthy Matron of the Liberty Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also served as a poll worker with the Election Commission and as a participant and board member of the Senior Citizens of Liberty.
Surviving are six daughters, Barbara Hudson of Florence, Ellen Smith(Bill) of Easley, Nancy Gantt (Kenneth) of Liberty, Judy Lindsay(Roger) of Pickens, Leona Flinchum (Donald) of Asheboro, N.C., and Lori Black (Tim) of Easley; five sons, Jim Smith(Susan) of Liberty, Larry Smith (Geri) of Lexington, Dean Smith of Greenville, Steve Smith (Sandra) of Anderson, and Neil Smith of Pickens; 33 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, and 11 great great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, JC Hudson, a daughter-in-law, Beverly Smith, and three grandchildren, Cindy Addington, Warren Smith, and Shannon Lindsay, and she was also predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Smith were 11 a.m. Friday at Calumet Baptist Church. Burial was at Westview Cemetery.

Bruce E. Gillespie, Sr.
Liberty – Bruce Eugene Gillespie, Sr., 78, of Liberty, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Mr. Gillespie was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Ervin Lee and Lillian Finley Gillespie. He retired from the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.
Surviving are his son, Bruce E. Gillespie, Jr.; a daughter, Earline G. Muchow (Fred); a granddaughter, Melissa Muchow and a special niece, Nancy Gillespie Deal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Limbaugh Gillespie; a daughter, Lee Anne Gillespie; a grandson, Chad Dalton; three brothers, Roy T. Gillespie, Kenneth W. Gillespie and Lake E. Gillespie and a sister, Katherine G. Gillespie.
Funeral Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ryan Matthew Crum
Easley – Ryan Matthew Crum, 24, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Regency Hospital of Greenville.
Born in Easley, Ryan was the son of Roger Edgar and Tana Kallenbach Crum. Throughout his life, Ryan enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing in God’s great outdoors. He was also a gifted painter and a devoted member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church, who loved good preaching and seeing people come to know Christ.
In addition to his parents, Ryan is survived by his paternal grandmother, Evelyn Bryant Crum of Easley; two brothers, Alan (Brandi) Crum of Easley and Nathan (Erin) Crum of Pauline; one nephew, Nolan Crum of Pauline; and two soon-to-be nephews, Matthew and Drayke Crum of Easley.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at Jones Avenue Baptist Church. Burial followed in Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC 29642.
Escort of Honor will be the Young Adults for Christ of Jones Avenue Baptist Church.

Frances C. Porter
Six Mile – Frances Collins Porter, 85, of Six Mile, known to many as “Mama Porter”, died Thursday, May 12, 2011.
Born in Oconee County, she was the wife of the late Doyle E. Porter and the daughter of the late George and Minnie Sloan Collins. Mrs. Porter was retired from Reigel Manufacturing of LaFrance after 40 years of service.
Surviving are her children, Dale Porter (Elaine), Glenda Russell (Rick), and Joan Stephens (Lamar) all of Six Mile; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Ovaline Bentley of Waterloo; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret Collins, Lois Bryant, and Christine Swafford; and two brothers, Ansel “Doc” Collins and Seaborn Collins.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the employees of Heritage Health Care and United Hospice of the Upstate for the exceptional care of Mrs. Porter.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 15 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Donald B. Pickel
Easley – Donald Bruce Pickel, 68, husband of Mary Jo Pickel of Easley, died Friday, May 13, 2011.
He was born in Six Mile on June 13, 1942, a son of the late Wayne and Nora Pickel. He was retired and a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Easley.
Survivors include two sons, Rodney (Gay) of Rock Hill and Robert (Pam) of Easley and a daughter Aimee Mohler (Michael) of Easley; six grandchildren, Wil, Christopher, Tim, Nate, Abigail, and Macie. He is survived also by three sisters and three brothers.
A memorial service was 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at Brushy Creek Baptist Church, 100 Clay Street, Easley, SC. A private graveside service will be held.

John E. “Pejoe” Cartee, Sr.
Easley – John Edsel “Pejoe” Cartee, 85, formerly of Liberty, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.
Born in Liberty, he was the son of the late Leland Walker and Ollie Belle Crane Cartee. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Liberty and was an avid Clemson fan. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather and the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his former wife, Mary L. Cartee of Liberty; a son, John E. “Butch” Cartee, Jr. (Nancy) of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two daughters, Jane Foster(Howard) of Greer and Leigh Ann Bates(Bill) of Easley; grandchildren, Erin Honey, Jennifer Moore, Matt Fleming, Caralee Foster, David Foster, Lena Durham and Hank Bates; great grandchildren, Lorelei Honey, Grace Fleming and Cain and Jacob Durham; and his favorite furry friends, J.R., Sam and Dolly.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by five sisters, Virginia Comer, Kathleen Hand, Frankie Timms, Mary B. Cartee and Doris Cartee.
Private family services for Mr. Cartee will be held at a later date.

Leonard R. Hooper
Easley – Leonard R. Hooper, 77, of Easley, died on Sunday, May 15, 2011, surrounded by family and friends at his residence on Rolling Hills Circle, after a long battle with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy).
Leonard was born August 4, 1933 in Tuckasegee, N.C., the fourth child of the late Lloyd C. and Gertie Hoyle Hooper. He owned and operated the “Kar Klinic” in Easley and later retired from E.I. DuPont in Cedar Mountain, N.C. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church. Leonard was the clown prince of his family. His companion was laughter and he will be sorely missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kaye Holbrook Hooper; by three children, Lana Harte (Robert) of Cleveland, Tenn., Brenda McCall (Monte) of Barnesville, Ga., and Ray Hooper of Easley; by five grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson (Scott), Brendon McCall (Dana), Travis Len McCall, Britni McCall and Jesi Hooper; by four sisters, Melba Hooper of Easley, Ina Hooper of Leesburg, Fla., Glana Stanley (Maurice) of Wilmington, N.C., and Mildred Brown (Henry) of Darlington, Wash.; by five brothers, Lloyd Hooper of Augusta, Ga., Kenneth Hooper (Christine) of Winter Haven, Fla., Alvin Hooper (Ellen) and Eugene Hooper (Betty) all of Pisgah Forest, N.C., and Mac Hooper (Irene) of Penrose, N.C., and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and two infant siblings, Agnes Hooper and E.M. Hooper.
Services were Wednesday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at Jones Avenue Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Moses Cemetery (Wesleyan Church Cemetery) in Tuckasegee, N.C.
Escort of honor will be the Huntsville Hunting Club and special friends.

Ruth Nalley
Liberty – Ruth Elizabeth Mullikin Nalley, 92, of 6 Blue Ridge Drive, widow of Ralph W. Nalley, died peacefully, Monday, May 16, 2011 at Fellowship Health & Rehab in Anderson.
Born in Anderson she was a daughter of the late Andrew F. and Bessie McAlister Mullikin. She retired from the School District of Pickens County where she worked numerous years in the lunchroom at Liberty Elementary School. Mrs. Nalley was a member of First Baptist Church, Liberty for 70 years and was a 1937 graduate of Liberty High School.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Nalley and his wife Martha of Liberty; three grandchildren, Scott Nalley of Liberty, and Christine & Matthew Markners of Athens, Ga.; three great grandchildren, Keeli Nalley, Cameron & Lana Markners.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Ruth Nalley and three brothers.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Nalley will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Ruby Seaborn
Norris – Ruby Ledford Seaborn, 73, of 114 Betty Street, died Sunday morning at her residence.
Born in Franklin, N.C., she was the widow of the late Gordon Elmer Seaborn and a daughter of the late Charlie and Pearl Stamey Ledford. She was retired from West Point Stevens in Clemson and a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are three sons, Ric Seaborn of the home. Gene Seaborn of Six Mile and Doug Seaborn and his wife Lisa of Central; one sister; two brothers; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Seaborn were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Woody Chapman
Pickens – David Woodrow “Woody” Chapman, 73, of Walhalla Highway, died Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Hospice of the Upstate.
Born in Pickens, he was the son of the late Fred H. and Grace Dodgens Chapman.
Woody was the owner and operator of Chapman Citgo and Wrecker Service for over 30 years. He attended Cedar Hill Holiness Church.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Duncan Chapman; a daughter, Linda (Jeff) Byrd; a son, David (Amanda) Chapman; five grandchildren; two brothers, William Chapman and Bobby Chapman; five sisters, Shirley Chapman; Dorothy Porter; Bertha Galloway; Mary Lou Dodson; and Etta Olson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Chapman and Fred Chapman.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 18 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, with the Rev. Judy Smith and Rev. Roger Todd officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1 – 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home.

David Rice
Liberty – Hamilton David Rice, 56, of 303 Lakeview Drive, died Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Rockville Centre, N.Y. he was a son of Carol Stevens Rice and the late Hamilton Hunter Rice.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Mentor, Ohio, are his wife, Kathy Caddell Rice of the home; two sons, Nathaniel and Matthew Rice both of the home; a brother, Steven Rice of Mentor, Ohio; his father in law, Harold George Caddell of Easley.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a sister, Sharen Rice Kalb.
Funeral services to celebrate David’s life will be 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Cathy Gilstrap
Liberty – Cathy Elaine Gilstrap, 51, of 208 Porter Road, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at her home.
Born in Anderson County, a daughter of Betty Ruth Aiken of Anderson and the late Wesley Craft, Cathy was a homemaker and a member of High Falls Church of God. She was a loving mother and wife and a caring grandmother and sister.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Willard Randall Gilstrap of the home; a son, Randall Lee Gilstrap of Easley; three daughters, Sarah Amanda Rutz of Six Mile, Heather Lashaey Gilstrap and Courtney Hope Hayes both of the home; two brothers, Junior Aiken of Anderson and Wayne Aiken of Easley; three half-brothers, Tony, Wayne and Mike Craft; four sisters, Reginae Aiken and Jean Davis of Liberty, Maryann Craft of Anderson and Christina Humphrey, of Pelzer; one step-sister, Ann Wilson; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
In addition to her father she was predeceased by a sister, Mot Hendrix.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley.
