Official warns residents of jury duty scam

COUNTY — Pickens County clerk of court Pat Welborn is warning residents about phone scammers.

“There is somebody that’s calling people up on the phone and stating that they’ve missed a court date for jury duty,” Welborn said Monday. “They’re telling people that they need to send in money to stop the bench warrant process.”

Pickens County spokeswoman Sharon Johnson said residents are getting calls from (864) 810-4527 with an automated message that tells them if they don’t send money, they’ll go to jail. She said Welborn believes the scam stems from a story in local media a few months ago about the
