EASLEY — Eighteen people showed up last week to speak out against the Pickens County School Board’s decision to ban two books from district schools.

During the more than 45-minute public comment session at the Oct. 24 board meeting, parents and teachers voiced their concerns to trustees about the removal of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” by Stephen Chbosky, and

South Carolina students making the grade?

I might regret this by the time I’m done, but I’m going to dust off my old education reporter’s hat and take a dive into the test results that came out last week from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Why would I want to undertake such a torturous, boring-sounding endeavor?

Because I think it’s important. I’ll try to not make it boring.

This test, also called “the Nation’s Report Card” — not to be confused with the School Report

White issues response to Twitter story

Dear Editor,

I want to respond to the article last week that implied I wrote some derogatory posts on Twitter last year. As I said in the article, I did not write those posts.

Two years ago, a friend and I created an account on Twitter that we both shared access to. It was a political opinion page, and I contributed to it early on. I left the page and Twitter all together shortly thereafter. (Anyone following my campaign knows I use Facebook or Nextdoor

God’s authority rewards faith and obedience

Dedicating our heart to God will be our most important decision. Individuals who devote their lives to Christ are aware of what is at stake and embrace the burden of praying for the lost and testifying about God’s love.

For those who rarely venture out beyond the safety of the church and spend the majority of their time within the comforts of private isolation, it’s common to forget how far the world has fallen away from the reverential fear of God, especially in the last few years. We should not be

LIBERTY — After losing all-state players Chantzli Fowler and Kendall Meinders to graduation, it was easy to temper expectations for the Liberty High School volleyball team heading into the 2022 season.

“There was a lot of doubt going into the season,” Liberty senior Teagan Owens said. “From losing Kendall and Chantzli, it seemed like everyone thought there was going to be a dropoff.”

Those beliefs have proven to be anything but true, as the Red Devils took down former region foe Ninety Six 3-0 in the third round of the playoffs last

Pickens shocked by Aiken at home

By Bru Nimmons

PICKENS — Down 17-16 in the consequential fifth set against Aiken, the Pickens Blue Flame were in a familiar spot, having already survived match point against the Green Hornets four times late in the set.

When Aiken’s Baylee Rabun served, both Ava Owens and Faith Clarkson moved to receive the serve, with Owens making the play, only for the ball to fly toward Clarkson’s vacated spot. With the season on the line, Pickens’

PIEDMONT — The members of the Daniel High School volleyball team had their backs to the wall Wednesday night, but they were going down swinging.

The season was on the line in Round 3 of the Class 3A playoffs at Wren (24-4), last season’s Upper State champion. Wren’s height and hard-hitting front line had taken control after Daniel opened the

Red Devils rally late in regular-season finale against Chesnee

By Ryan Davenport

LIBERTY — Among the more common refrains in coaching is “You will make mistakes, but it is how you respond after those mistakes that means the most.”

The Liberty High School football team was a textbook case of that old adage during Friday night’s 49-41 win over the visiting Chesnee Eagles (2-8), with the Devils’
