COUNTY — Officials are considering renaming the Pickens County Law Enforcement Center after one of the longest-serving sheriffs in the country.

During their April Committee of the Whole meeting, Pickens County Council members discussed a recommendation to rename the law enforcement center in honor of C. David Stone.

First elected sheriff in 1969, Stone was re-elected 10 times, serving nearly 44 years until his retirement in 2012. At the time of his retirement, he was the second longest-serving sheriff in the United States.

Stone died on Dec. 15, 2020. He was 83.

Council brought the matter out of committee during its May 2 meeting.

County council chairman Chris Bowers had asked county attorney Les Hendricks to

POWDERSVILLE — Playing in what head coach Phillip Boyer described as the most intense game of his career, the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team clawed its way out to a 2-0 lead against Powdersville on Monday night before a last-minute goal by the Patriots cut the lead to one.

With the season on the line, the Lions’ back line hunkered down as it had all night, never allowing the Patriots to gain an inch and outlasting them through an excruciatingly long stoppage time to pull out the 2-1 win in the Class 3A Upper State championship match and secure a return to the state

EASLEY — Easley held off a pesky Greenville team Wednesday night in the first round of the Class 4A District 2 playoffs, winning 6-2.

It took Easley a while to feel comfortable, as Greenville matched the Wave run for run early on.

Green Wave see season end at home

EASLEY — After picking up their second straight region championship and a first-round bye, the Easley High School boys soccer team kicked off the playoffs May 4 against the Indian Land Warriors.

Despite their season of successes, the Green Wave lost 3-0 in what was described as a “winnable game” by head coach Ross Goodacre due to some bad bounces falling in favor of the Warriors and a number of missed opportunities on the offensive end.

“The game plan was there and the formation matched up perfectly,” Goodacre said. “We were

CENTRAL — After getting two first-half goals from Katie Hudson, the Daniel High School girls’ soccer team seemed well on its way to victory in second-round playoff action against Chapman on Thursday night.

However, the Panthers rallied in the last 30 minutes, scoring a goal to cut into the lead and pressing the Lions late in the contest. With the lead on the line in the 76th minute, Chapman’s Torii Rogers broke free from her defender in the box. One on one with Daniel keeper Beth Anderson, she launched the would-be equalizer that defined the
