Hundreds more charges filed in ‘Prison Empire’ drug conspiracy investigation

STATE — The South Carolina State Grand Jury has issued indictments containing nearly 500 charges against 100 defendants in the “Prison Empire” investigation, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Monday.

Many of those indicted face charges in Pickens County.

Wilson held a press conference on “Prison Empire” Monday afternoon.

“About a year and a half ago, we had a round of indictments come through on a very complex drug trafficking conspiracy that was being run out of South Carolina prison systems,” Wilson said.

Pickens council field down to 3

PICKENS — Just two weeks out from Pickens’ special city council election, one of the four candidates on the ballot has dropped out of the race to replace Donna Owen on council.

Jonathan Baker, an admissions coordinator at Easley Place skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Easley, withdrew from the race on March 1, according to Pickens County elections director Travis Alexander.

Market at the Mill plans spring festival

Sculpture unveiled at historic church

PICKENS — “We are gathered at this special place to dedicate a sculpture honoring this special place — Soapstone Baptist Church in the Liberia community,” Clemson University anthropology professor Mike Coggeshall said Saturday.
