Tri-County scholarship to honor Lewis

PENDLETON — “Education was her driving force; she dedicated her life to it,” Lucas Durham proudly says when remembering his mother, Dr. C. Lynn Lewis, former dean of Tri-County Technical College’s Health Education Division, who passed away March 14, 2020, just 10 months after retirement in 2019.

“We miss her every day,” Durham said, adding that the best way to honor their mother was for him and his sister, Lindsay Porter, to establish an endowed scholarship in her memory.

Cooking with grapes adds depth to flavors

Years ago at my grandmama’s house, Fowler and my brother brought in duck they’d shot over the pond.

After they cleaned them, they were brought into the kitchen to be cooked. So we washed them thoroughly, patted them dry, salted and peppered them and stuffed them with sliced oranges and grapes. Then we roasted them in the oven, and when they were ready, removed them from the roasting pan and poured in wine to glaze the pan. After the liquid reduced, it was poured over the duck and they were served. It was a memorable meal.

County mourns loss of employee to COVID-19

COUNTY — Pickens County administration lost its first employee to COVID-19 last week.

County risk manager Mike Hayes died Thursday after battling the virus for weeks. He was 57.

Hayes began working for the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office in 1989, according to a post on the Pickens County SC Facebook page announcing his death.

He was a detective at the time of his retirement from law enforcement.

Hayes was hired as the county’s risk manager in 2013.

Body found in car in Hartwell

CLEMSON — Authorities were investigating after a body was found in a car in Lake Hartwell on Tuesday.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said Tuesday afternoon that one body had been found in the car near the Twin Lakes Recreation Area.

The body was discovered after a person at the park saw the vehicle in the water.

Kelley said Pickens County Sheriff’s Office investigators were also at the scene.
