Seniors urged to beware of vaccine scam

COLUMBIA — The top U.S. attorney in South Carolina is warning residents to be on “high alert” for scams related to the coronavirus vaccine.

U.S. Attorney Peter McCoy Jr. issued a news release recently warning that since the beginning of December, the Federal Trade Commission has received more than 250,000 COVID-19 related consumer complaints. Two-thirds of the complaints have involved fraud or identity theft.

“Having already seen supply scams, provider scams, economic impact scams, phishing scams and even charity scams related to COVID-19 across the country, every South Carolinian should be extra cautious for the possibility of phony websites and other outreach claiming early access to the vaccine,” McCoy said. “Everyone, particularly seniors and their caretakers, should be on high alert for fraudsters seeking to take advantage of their most vulnerable neighbors.”

McCoy said it’s important for people to know you can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the COVID-19 vaccine or get early access to receive it. No legitimate vaccine distribution site will call asking for your Social Security, banking or credit card numbers, McCoy said.

Anyone who believes they’ve been a victim of a scam or fraud should contact the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-720-5721 or online at justice.gov/coronavirus.

“Along with law enforcement partners, the United States Attorney’s Office will work to identify, investigate and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those who seek to defraud their neighbors during this pandemic,” McCoy said.

Following a 1-4 start to the season, the Lions got off to a great start in tournament play against Liberty on Dec. 21 with a 68-38 win.

“We just need some momentum going into January,” Daniel head coach Ben Touchberry said after the win. “I think this one helped some guys get some experience and helped us kind of piece this thing together from a chemistry

Counting on better days to come

Thanksgiving is usually the time of year we seriously give some thought to counting our blessings. We did that this year. But now that 2021 is almost here, we can rejoice and be thankful that we got through 2020 and have survived it.

And eventually, we will have the opportunity to be vaccinated against the deadly virus that’s changed our lives so drastically.

Never before has one tank of gas lasted forever. It’s been a deliberate decision, staying at home. But one brought about by circumstances. For where on Earth could we go? Nowhere is safe from the virus, so we can’t go out to eat, shop or to the movies.

The delivery truck is such a familiar sight in our

Embracing hope for the New Year

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday, but I must admit that it did not seem like a normal Christmas. Yes, we sent out cards and decorated the tree, but there was something strange about the atmosphere.

The signs of the virus are everywhere, and I cannot help but think about how many families have been impacted by it. Some of you may have missed seeing your loved ones because it was not safe for them to

Courier’s Letters to the Editor

Let’s hang together

Dear Editor,

2020 is a year that will be remembered for decades to come. 300,000 lives lost to coronavirus, which was proclaimed to be nothing but a hoax by some. Pray for the people who lost family and friends to this so-called hoax and for those who stubbornly refuse to believe it exists.

The elections are over, and I for one am glad. If these politicians are even half as bad as their
