The classes will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 16, 23 and 30 and Oct. 7, 14 and 21.
The six-week workshop sessions for adults, being held in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio, is designed for the pastel artist who wishes to gain a more “painterly” approach to working with pastels. The class will be focusing on working from original photographs taken by the artist and how to choose the elements from the photo that will make a dynamic painting.
The class will experiment with adjusting composition and lighting and color choices. With that, students will come to appreciate the way in which a camera “sees” compared to what our eyes can see. It will also cover the creative construction of still-life views and the importance of seeing the beauty in the relationship of simple objects. Of course, it will continue the exploration of the different ways to work with pastel. And, best of all, the group will be taking to the outdoors to participate in the spontaneity of plein air painting.
According to museum officials, the class is “an exciting and challenging workshop designed to help free the artist within.”
Students are asked to provide their own pastels and pastel paper. Tuition for the class is $88 — or $78 for museum members. Pre-registration is required. Tuition must be paid prior to the first class. No refunds on tuition will be available after the start of the class. Class size is limited.
Cronin-Webb is a member of the Pastel Society of America, The Southeastern Pastel Society, The Appalachian Pastel Society and The Portrait Society of America. Her work can be seen at The Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville. She has participated in several one-woman shows, as well as group shows throughout the United States. Her work is in corporate and private collections in the United States, Asia and Europe.
