Pickens AD Corn earns honor
PICKENS — Steve Corn, athletic director at Pickens High School, was named the South Carolina Athletic Director of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association on March 10.
Corn has served as the AD at PHS for 13 years. He was initially hired at the school as a basketball coach, but has also worn the hats of football coach, cross-country coach, tennis coach, golf coach and track coach in his time at PHS.
“I know someone at the school must have nominated me, and I appreciate that, and I was surprised,” Corn said. “Hopefully it means that they think I’ve done a good job and that they think I try to make decisions that are best for the students, the community and the school.”
Corn’s passion for working in athletics stems from his time as a student at PHS. “I knew from when I was in 11th grade that I wanted to be a basketball coach and that I wanted to be involved in athletics at any school I went to.”
Corn said he wouldn’t be able to do his job without the support of his wife, Sharon.
He said the award is “a reflection on the coaches and the athletes and PHS, and on what happens when you work for someone like (PHS principal) Marion Lawson.”
