Pickens County Museum set to offer introduction to mosaic

PICKENS — The Pickens County Museum of Art and History recently announced registration is open for the summer introduction to mosaic sessions for adults.

The new art class with Renee Gillespie will begin July 16.

Mosaic is an ancient artform utilizing small pieces of stone or colored glass to create lush, detailed images.

Gillespie will instruct students on everything from the basics to the fine details of creating their very own mosaic artwork.

The class will be held on Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. on July 16 and 23 and Aug. 20 and 27.

This four-week session for adults is being held in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio. The beginning mosaic class will introduce students to different types of mosaic, including paper, glass, tile and stone. Students will design their own mosaic, choose their medium and receive individual instruction to help them with their mosaic. Students provide their own supplies. A supply list will be discussed at the first class. Tuition for the class is $88 — or $78 for museum members. Pre-registration is required. Tuition must be paid prior to the first class. No refunds will be available on tuition after start of class.

Gillespie, has a bachelor’s degree in Art from Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and has also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently practicing the nearly lost art of miniature painting. Taking instruction from a member of England’s Royal Miniature Society, the oldest miniature society in the world, Gillespie has been learning the art and discipline in the European mode. Gillespie is also gifted in Batik and natural dying. Her Indigo Dyed Cloth has been purchased by the Smithsonian Institution.
