Three workshops set at county museum
PICKENS — The Pickens County Museum of Art and History is pleased to announce that registration is now open for three new art workshops. The award-winning art instructor for these workshops, Christina Laurel, has a Bachelor Degree in Studio Art from the College at Brockport with additional studies at the University of Maryland and Cornell University. Laurel’s work is included in the museum’s September 7 – November 14 exhibition, “South Carolina Fiber Artists: Connecting Concept & Medium.”
September 14:
“COLLAGE” Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio. Class size is minimum 4 students, maximum 8 and is designed for adults (18 years +): Explore collage techniques to create 2-D and 3-D works of art. Create “stock savant” images ala advertising pioneer Ben Pierat, autobiographical portraits in the style of Romare Bearden, “flora delanica” botanicals inspired by 17th-century’s Mary Granville Pendarves Delaney, and chiasmage as invented by Czech artist Jiri Kolar. Bring magazines for your project. Other materials provided. Tuition for this class is only $80 ($70 for museum members). Pre-registration is required and must be paid by Sept 12.
October 12:
“GRAPHITE EXPANDED” Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio. Class size is minimum 4 students, maximum 8 and is designed for adults (18 years + ): Delve into your personal style by expanding upon traditional mark- making techniques. Learn to use the grid system, how to apply powdered and water-soluble graphite, and draw with technical pens. Then, combine graphite and pen to create a mixed-media drawing. Bring an 8×10 black and white printout of a photograph of a favorite face, landscape, or still life. Other materials provided. Tuition for this class is only $80 ($70 for museum members). Pre-registration is required and tuition must be paid by Oct 10.
November 9:
“SUMINIGASHI & SUMI-E” Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio. Class size is minimum 4 students, maximum 8 and is designed for adults (18 years + ): Suminagashi marbles paper by «floating ink» – a process that originated in 12th century Japan; Sumi-e uses bamboo-handled brushes with sumi (ink) to create deceptively simple paintings. Learn about Japanese papers and Asian art forms. Materials provided. Tuition for this class is only $80 ($70 for museum members). Pre-registration is required and tuition must be paid by Nov 7.
Pre-registration is required for all workshops and you may register on-line at www.visitpickenscounty.com/calendar, in person, or by calling the Pickens County Museum at (864) 898-5963. Tuition may be paid by cash, check or charge. Make check payable to the Pickens County Museum or call the Museum to use your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Workshops will be held at the Pickens County Museum, 307 Johnson Street in Pickens. Full Tuition must be paid before session. Students will be notified if a workshop is cancelled or filled. If cancelled, all tuition will be reimbursed to registered student. No tuition will be reimbursed after date of this workshop.
