Tragic accident takes Liberty 7-year-old’s life
LIBERTY — Tragedy occurred in the Liberty community last Thursday, as 7-year-old Emma Elizabeth Boughman was struck by an SUV as she rode her scooter across Odell Street near the intersection with Willard Street.
The accident occurred at 4:26 p.m. Boughman was hit by a 2005 Honda SUV.
Boughman died at 5:48 p.m. at Greenville Memorial Hospital, according to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley.
Boughman, the daughter of Liberty city councilman Eric Boughman, was a first-grader at Chastain Road Elementary School in Liberty and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley. She is survived by her parents, Eric and Kimberly Boughman, and her brother, Houston Alan Boughman, as well as her grandparents Susan and Eddie Barker of Seneca, Ron and Jane Boughman of Gaffney, and Mrs. David (Eunice) Freeman of Liberty.
Liberty Mayor Michael Sheriff said the small town was devastated by the tragedy, but he was proud of the way the city rallied around the Boughman family.
“I have never seen such an outpouring of care in my life,” Sheriff said. “That’s one of the things I love about the city of Liberty. We may disagree on certain issues, but when something like this happens we stand united.”
Funeral services were conducted 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012 at Rock Springs Baptist Church with Dr. David Gallamore, the Rev. Bo Mackey, and the Rev. Mark Kannarney officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens in Clemson.
A fund has been set up for the Boughman family at all First Citizens Bank branches in Pickens and Greenville Counties. Donations are anonymous.
