LIBERTY — The fifth annual Wings and Wheels for Meals event is scheduled for this Saturday at the Pickens County Airport.

Wings and Wheels for Meals is a signature fundraising event for Pickens County Meals on Wheels. The event is held each April at the Pickens County Airport, and is hosted by the Pickens County Pilot’s Association.

This year’s event will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, and organizers expect thousands in attendance, as the event has grown in popularity each year.

Admission is free, but a $10 donation at the entrance to the airport gives each vehicle an opportunity to win one of two $250 Walmart gift cards. The donation helps Pickens County Meals on Wheels provide homebound elderly and disabled people with a nutritious meal, a friendly visit and a safety check that helps them live independently in their own homes.

This year’s event will feature airplane and helicopter rides, as well as a custom and classic car show, among other attractions.

Fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter will be on hand to offering event-goers a bird’s eye view of Pickens County. In addition, an open cockpit, bi-wing Steerman will be available for those seeking an aviation experience akin to early years of aviation.

More than 150 car owners will be on hand for one of the best classic and custom car shows in the Upstate. Winners will receive a trophy. “Best in Show” will be a judged event, and the “People’s Choice” award will be given to the car that receives the most cash votes.

Between admiring cars and airplane rides, spectators can enjoy a lunch or snack from Bates Masonic Lodge and Yoder’s of Meece Mill, a display of radio-controlled aircraft by the Raptors RC Club and the chance to win giveaway items.

At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Pickens County Rescue Squad will demonstrate a vehicle extrication and repel rescue demonstration.

Over the last four years, the event has consistently grown. In its fifth year, plans are under way to make it the most successful Wings and Wheels for Meals yet, with a fundraising goal of $13,500.

The Pickens County Airport is located at 240 Airport Road in Liberty.
